When my newest memoir, The Village that Betrayed its Children was published in September, 2024, I decided to have a book launch in Orono, the nearest town to my village. I had no trouble reserving the historic Orono town hall for the event. I even had an interview with the publisher of the Orono Weeky Times.
In the meantime, Andrea Skinner, daughter of Alice Munro, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, wrote an article in the Toronto Star, about the childhood sexual abuse she endured at the hands of her mother's husband. In addition she wrote about how her mother knew and sided with her husband, against her daughter. I also saw that Andrea lived and worked nearby to where I grew up - at a horse farm near Millbrook, Ontario. I wrote to the horse farm and invited Andrea and the woman in charge of the horse farm to my book launch. They came! and I was thrilled to start an online/Zoom conversation with Andrea about the legacy of child sexual abuse.
Over the next few months, we had a total of nine conversations which I will be posting on this page for all to listen to. They are honest descriptions, between two women, who were both affected by having endure this abuse as children. I hope you tune in!
